Website Not Getting Enquiries? Here Is Why

A website not getting enquiries is the most frustrating thing a business owner can own.

The analytics look healthy. People are arriving, and the line holds steady or occasionally climbs. Meanwhile the inbox stays empty.

Everybody offers the same advice, which is to get more traffic. However, if a hundred visitors produce nothing, five hundred will produce nothing at greater expense.

A website not getting enquiries has a conversion problem rather than a traffic problem. This article covers the nine causes we find most often, along with how to check each one on your own site. Give it an hour and you will know exactly which apply to you.

Start by Closing the Analytics Tab

The number that matters is not how many people visited. Instead, it is what proportion of them did the thing you wanted.

A website not getting enquiries is judged on that proportion alone. When it sits near zero, adding visitors changes nothing.

So put the traffic report aside. Then open your website on your own phone, exactly as a stranger would. Everything below follows from that.

Nine Reasons a Website Is Not Getting Enquiries

1. Nobody can tell what you do

The check. Show your homepage to somebody who does not know your business. Five seconds, then close it and ask them what you do.

If they hesitate, guess, or describe something vague, this is your problem, and consequently nothing else on the list matters yet.

The cause is almost always a headline written to sound impressive rather than to inform. For example, transforming businesses through innovative solutions tells a visitor nothing at all.

The fix. State what you do, who it serves, and what changes. Our guide to what to put on your homepage works through this line by line.

2. The site is slow on a real phone

The check. Open your site on mobile data rather than office wifi. Then count the seconds until you can read something and tap something.

Most Kenyan visitors arrive on a phone, often on a limited bundle. Therefore a site taking eight seconds has already lost a large share of them before they read a single word.

The usual causes are huge uncompressed images, too many plugins, and cheap overloaded hosting.

The fix. Compress every image, remove what you do not use, and examine your hosting. See simple ways to speed up your website.

3. There is no obvious next step

The check. On each page, ask what a visitor is supposed to do next. If finding the answer takes more than a moment, it is not obvious enough.

Many sites bury contact behind a menu item. Others offer six competing actions, so the visitor picks none of them.

The fix. One primary action, worded identically, repeated near the top, the middle, and the bottom of every page.

4. Your form is broken

The check. Fill in your own contact form right now and send it. Then go and look for it.

We find broken forms constantly. Submissions vanish inside a plugin, land in a spam folder, or route to an old email address nobody opens any more. Meanwhile your visitor sees a thank you message and assumes you received it.

Also count your fields, because every extra field costs you responses. Name, contact, and message is usually enough at first contact.

The fix. Test monthly, route submissions to an address you actually read, and reply quickly. See the role of contact forms in lead generation.

5. There is no proof

The check. Count the named clients, specific results, and real testimonials on your site. Where that count is zero, you are asking a stranger to trust you on your own word alone.

Anonymous praise does not count. For instance, excellent service and highly recommend, attributed to a happy client, reads as invented, because usually it is.

The fix. One testimonial carrying a full name, a role, and a specific outcome beats six vague ones. In addition, add client logos, numbers you can defend, and a real photograph of yourself if you work alone. See trust signals every website needs.

6. You say nothing about price

The check. Can a visitor form any idea of what you cost without contacting you?

Many businesses withhold price hoping to secure a conversation first. However, very few visitors enquire in order to discover whether they can afford you. They leave and check somebody who answered the question.

The fix. Publish a figure, a starting point, or a range. As a result you lose enquiries you were never going to win, and gain the ones you were.

7. The site looks neglected

The check. Look for a dated event, an old announcement, a copyright year from three years ago, or a blog whose last post arrived in 2022.

Visitors read staleness as a signal that the business itself may be inactive. It is unfair, and it is completely normal.

The fix. Remove dates you cannot maintain, update the obvious ones, and either commit to the blog or hide it.

8. You are attracting the wrong visitors

The check. Look at which pages people land on, and which search terms bring them. Could these people actually buy from you?

A blog post ranking for something adjacent to your service brings plenty of traffic and no intent whatsoever. Consequently you get a healthy graph sitting beside an empty inbox.

The fix. Build content around the questions people ask immediately before buying, rather than general interest topics. Then link those pages clearly to your service pages.

9. Nothing happens after somebody enquires

The check. How long do you take to reply?

This cause sits outside the website, and it undoes everything the website achieved. An enquiry answered within four hours converts far better than the same enquiry answered three days later. By then, many of those people have already hired somebody else.

The fix. An automatic acknowledgement immediately, a human reply the same day wherever possible, and a WhatsApp option for people who prefer it.

The One Hour Audit

Diagnosing a website not getting enquiries takes about an hour. Work through this in order, because fixing later items achieves nothing while earlier ones remain broken.

Minutes 0 to 10. Open your site on your phone on mobile data. Time the load, then run the five second test on somebody else.

Minutes 10 to 20. Submit your own contact form. Confirm it arrives, and check where it goes.

Minutes 20 to 35. Read your homepage as a stranger. Is the offer clear? Can you find proof anywhere? Does a price appear? Would a stranger know what to do next?

Minutes 35 to 50. Click every button and every link. Note anything broken, slow, or confusing.

Minutes 50 to 60. Write your list in order. Broken things first, unclear things second, missing things third.

That list is your actual project. Most of it will be smaller than you feared. Some of it, however, will not be something you can do yourself, which is worth knowing too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my website not getting enquiries despite good traffic? Almost always one of three things. Visitors cannot quickly tell what you do, there is no clear next step, or the enquiry route is broken. Therefore check those before anything else.

How many enquiries should a website generate? It varies enormously by industry and by traffic quality. The useful comparison is against your own site last month, after you fix something.

Should I redesign the whole site? Usually not. Most conversion problems are content and clarity problems wearing a design costume. In short, diagnose before you rebuild. See signs your website needs a redesign.

Is a website not getting enquiries always an SEO problem? No. If people are arriving, your SEO is working at least partly. Your problem is what happens after they arrive.

How long before fixes show results? Broken forms and speed fixes can change things within days. Clarity and proof changes usually show across weeks.

Can I do this audit myself? Yes, which is why it is written this way. Some of the fixes will need help.

If Your List Is Longer Than Your Weekend

Working through that hour produces a list. Some of it you can handle yourself. However, some of it is structural, and no amount of editing will rescue a site that was built badly underneath.

A website not getting enquiries rarely needs more traffic. Above all, it needs clarity, proof, speed, and a route to contact you that actually works.
