1. Colour contrast. Light grey text on white looks refined and excludes people. Aim for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 for normal text. Free contrast checkers will test any two colours in seconds.

2. Alt text on meaningful images. Describe what the image conveys rather than listing keywords. Decorative images should carry empty alt attributes so screen readers skip them.

3. Real headings. Use actual heading tags in order rather than bold text made larger. Assistive technology navigates by headings, so a page without them is a wall.

4. Keyboard navigation. Every link, button, form field, and menu must work without a mouse, with a visible outline showing where focus currently sits.

10. Nothing that moves without permission. Auto playing video, rotating sliders, and animation that cannot be paused cause genuine difficulty for people with vestibular conditions and attention differences.

Test Your Own Site in Thirty Minutes

Auditing website accessibility in Kenya requires no specialist software to find most problems.

Unplug your mouse. Navigate the whole site using Tab, Shift Tab, and Enter. Can you reach everything? Does the outline always show where you are? Try submitting a form without touching the mouse once.

Zoom to 200%. Press Ctrl and plus, or Cmd and plus, several times. Does anything overlap or vanish?

Run a contrast checker on your body text, your buttons, and your footer. Footers fail most often.

Turn off images in your browser and read the page. What survives is roughly what a screen reader receives.

Run an automated scan using a free browser extension. Automated tools catch perhaps a third of issues, so treat the result as a starting list rather than a verdict.

A Warning About Accessibility Overlays

You will encounter products promising instant compliance through a single line of JavaScript, usually appearing as a floating accessibility button.

Approach these sceptically. Accessibility practitioners and screen reader users have criticised overlays extensively, arguing that they frequently interfere with the assistive technology people already use, while leaving the underlying problems untouched. Several vendors have faced legal action from users in other jurisdictions.

Fixing the site itself costs less over time and actually works.

Where to Start

Nobody achieves full conformance in a week, and website accessibility in Kenya does not require you to start there.

Begin with the pages that matter commercially. Your homepage, your main service page, your contact and booking forms. Fix contrast, headings, labels, and keyboard access on those first, because they carry your enquiries.

Then work outward. Add alt text as you publish new images rather than retrofitting hundreds at once. Build the checks into your process so the problem stops growing.

Finally, write down what you have done. If questions ever arise, a documented, ongoing effort sits in a very different position from nothing at all.
