Turning Jobs Into Referrals at the Right Moment

Turning a Finished Job Into the Next One

Turning jobs into referrals depends on one moment at the end of every job when the client is more pleased with you than they will ever be again.

The work is done, it went well, and they are relieved. In most Kenyan businesses, that is the exact moment nobody asks for anything.

Turning jobs into referrals is almost entirely a question of using that moment rather than walking away from it.

The Window Closes Fast

Goodwill is at its peak on completion day and decays quickly.

A week later they are busy with something else. A month later the details have faded. Three months later they would still recommend you if asked, and they will not think to mention you unprompted.

So the whole practice of turning jobs into referrals comes down to asking within days rather than eventually.

Turning Jobs Into Referrals Means Asking for Three Things

At completion, three separate requests are available, and most businesses make none.

A review. Public, permanent, and read by strangers deciding about you.

A referral. Do you know anybody else who needs this?

A return. When do you come back, and what else do you do?

Ask for all three, briefly, in one conversation. Nobody minds being asked once by somebody who just did good work.

How to Ask for a Review

Vague requests produce nothing.

Do not say, “Please leave us a review.” Send the direct link on the same day, and say specifically where you would like it.

Better, tell them what would help. Mentioning what you had done and how it went would be useful to somebody deciding. That produces a specific review rather than a two-word one, and specific reviews persuade.

Then reply to every review you receive, including any criticism. Our post on Google Business Profile Kenya covers where they sit.

How to Ask for a Referral

The general version fails.

Asking somebody to keep you in mind produces nothing, because it requires them to do the thinking. Be specific about who you want.

If you know anybody else planning the same kind of work, I would be glad if you passed on my number. That is a request somebody can actually act on, because it describes a person they might recognize.

Then make it easy. Send something they can forward, whether a message, a link, or a card.

How to Ask for a Return

One sentence at completion.

Tell them when to come back, if there is a cycle. Mention what else you do, since customers routinely do not know your full range. Then say plainly that you would welcome the work again.

Our post on repeat customers covers the list that makes this repeatable.

Then Say Thank You Properly

Referrals stop when they go unacknowledged.

When somebody sends you work, tell them. A message, a call, something small where the job was significant. Somebody who feels their recommendation was noticed refers again. Somebody who hears nothing quietly stops.

Make It Part of the Job

Turning jobs into referrals fails on memory and works on process.

Add three lines to your completion checklist. Review link sent. Referral asked. Return mentioned. Whoever finishes the job ticks them.

That is the whole system, and it costs nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I ask about turning jobs into referrals? On completion day, or within two or three days at most.

Is asking for a review pushy? Not once, from somebody who just did good work.

Should I offer a reward for referrals? Optional. Many Kenyan businesses do, and it works. Keep it simple and honest.

What if the job went badly? Do not ask. Fix it first, then ask later if it resolved well.

How do I ask without it feeling transactional? Ask once, briefly, at the end of a normal conversation.

What if they say no? Nothing is lost. Most people say yes when asked directly.
