How to Check Whether Google Has Indexed Your Website
Before worrying about rankings, check if Google indexed your website at all.
Plenty of Kenyan business sites are invisible for a reason that has nothing to do with competition. Search engines were never allowed to read them, or were never told they existed.
Learning to check if Google indexed your website takes two minutes and should happen before any other search work.
Check If Google Indexed Your Website in Two Minutes
Open Google and search for your domain using the site operator, like this: site:yourbusiness.co.ke
The results tell you three different things.
Many results appear. Your site is indexed. Count them roughly against how many pages you have.
A handful appear. Partial indexing. Some pages are being read and others are not.
Nothing appears. Nothing on your site is in the index, and no amount of content will help until that changes.
Repeat the test on individual page addresses to check specific pages.
Four Reasons Pages Get Left Out
A noindex instruction. The most common and most damaging. In WordPress a single reading setting tells search engines to ignore the entire site, and it gets left switched on after a build constantly. Check it first.
Robots.txt blocking. A file at your domain root can exclude crawlers. Visit yourbusiness.co.ke/robots.txt and read it.
The page is too new. Indexing takes time, particularly for a new domain with nothing linking to it.
Nothing links to the page. A page with no internal links pointing at it may never be found. Check your menu and your body links.
Use Search Console for the Real Answer
To properly check if Google indexed your website, the site search gives only an approximation. Google Search Console gives you the actual position.
Verify ownership of your domain, then open the pages report. It shows which pages are indexed, which are not, and the specific reason for each exclusion.
That reason column is the useful part. It distinguishes between a page blocked by a tag, a page found but not indexed, a duplicate, and a redirect. Our post on reading Search Console as a business owner covers interpreting it.
Submit a Sitemap
A sitemap is a list of your pages, published in a format search engines read.
Most content systems generate one automatically, frequently at yourbusiness.co.ke/sitemap.xml or sitemap_index.xml. Open the address and confirm it exists and lists your pages.
Then submit it in Search Console. This does not guarantee indexing, though it removes any excuse for not finding your pages.
Request Indexing for Important Pages
Where a specific page matters and is not indexed, Search Console allows you to request it directly.
Use this for new service pages and anything commercially important. Avoid requesting the same page repeatedly, since it does not accelerate anything.
Expect days rather than hours, and longer for a new site.
When It Is Fixed and Still Nothing Happens
Once you check if Google indexed your website and the answer is yes, remember that indexing is not ranking.
Indexing means your pages exist in the library. Ranking means somebody is shown them. A page can be perfectly indexed and never appear, because ten better pages answer the same question.
