What Should a Website Actually Cost in Kenya?
Ask five people what a website costs in Kenya and you will get five answers between KES 5,000 and KES 500,000.
That range is not a sign that someone is lying to you. It is a sign that the word “website” is being used to describe five genuinely different products. A KES 5,000 website and a KES 300,000 website are not competing offers. They are barely the same category of thing.
This article explains what drives website cost in Kenya, what each price band actually delivers, and what we charge. That last part matters. Almost no Kenyan agency publishes its prices, which is exactly why so many buyers feel they are guessing.
Why the Same Word Covers Such Different Work
Imagine asking what a vehicle costs. A boda, a second-hand saloon, and a new Prado are all vehicles. The question is not answerable without knowing which one you mean.
Websites work the same way. The variables that move the number are:
Pages. Three pages is a different job from thirty.
Custom design versus template. One is designed for your business. The other is adapted from something built for everyone.
Functionality. A contact form is simple. Booking systems, payments, member logins and portals are each substantial additions.
Content. Who writes the words and who takes the photographs.
Aftercare. Some quotes end at launch. Others carry support for months.
Two quotes are only comparable when all five of these match. Usually they do not.
What Each Price Band Actually Buys
Below KES 20,000. A free template with your logo dropped in. It will look acceptable on a laptop screen on day one. What has been removed is everything invisible — mobile testing, speed optimisation, security setup, clean code, documentation. You will not notice for months. You will notice when nobody can edit it and it takes eleven seconds to load on mobile data.
KES 20,000 to 60,000. A basic template build with some customisation. This can genuinely work for a very simple presence. Ask specifically who owns the domain and hosting, and what happens after launch.
KES 60,000 to 150,000. A properly built small business site. Designed around your goals rather than a template author’s assumptions. Mobile-first, fast, secure, with search setup done correctly on day one. This is where most coaches, consultants and small firms should be looking.
KES 150,000 to 300,000. More pages, real functionality — booking, payments, lead capture, member areas — and copy written for you rather than by you.
Above KES 300,000. Custom web applications, portals, learning platforms, large catalogues. Different product, different timeline, quoted properly rather than squeezed into a website price.
What We Charge
Here is our pricing, stated plainly.
Basic — KES 65,000. Three pages, enquiry form and WhatsApp button, built for the phone first, search setup on launch, live on your domain with your login.
Premium — KES 145,000. Up to eight pages, online booking connected to your calendar, M-Pesa and card payments working on launch day, a blog you can update yourself, copy written with you on one call, and one month of care included.
Pro — KES 265,000. Everything in Premium, plus copy written for you, lead capture into your email tool, a client portal or member area, thirty days of changes after launch and three months of care.
One payment structure across all three: half to start, half before going live. No hourly rate, no scope-creep invoice at the end. The number you are quoted is the number you pay.
Custom web applications — booking systems, portals, learning platforms — do not fit this model. Those start with a one-week scoping sprint at KES 75,000 that gives you a spec, screens and a fixed quote you keep even if you build elsewhere.
The Costs That Are Rarely in the Quote
Budget for these separately. They are annual and they do not stop.
Domain renewal. Roughly KES 950 to 3,000 per year depending on the extension and registrar.
Hosting. Roughly KES 3,000 to 15,000 per year for a small business site.
Maintenance. Updates, backups, security patches, uptime monitoring. Our care plans run from KES 8,500 per month, and they are optional — your site stays yours either way.
Content changes. New services, new photos, new pages.
Professional email. A business address on your own domain rather than a Gmail one.
Ignoring maintenance is the most expensive saving available. Our post on why cheap websites cost more long term explains how that bill eventually arrives.
How to Read Any Quote You Are Given
Five questions will tell you more than the price will.
- What exactly is excluded? The most valuable question on the list.
- Who owns the domain, hosting and files? The correct answer is you.
- Can I update content myself afterwards? If not, every small edit becomes an invoice.
- What happens after launch, and for how long?
- Can I see two sites you built over a year ago? Anyone can show a fresh launch.
Our guide to red flags in web design proposals covers the warning signs in more detail.
Is Cheaper Ever the Right Call?
Sometimes, honestly.
If you are testing an idea, have almost no budget and need a placeholder, a builder or a very cheap build is a reasonable stopgap. Nobody should spend KES 145,000 proving whether an offer works.
The trap is treating a stopgap as a solution. Most Kenyan businesses that start cheap rebuild within two years, and the rebuild costs more than doing it once. You pay for the first site, then pay again for the second, and lose the months in between.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a website cost in Kenya in total for the first year? For a professional small business site, budget from KES 65,000 for the build plus roughly KES 4,000 to 18,000 for domain and hosting. Care plans are optional on top.
Why do some agencies refuse to give a price without a meeting? Sometimes the scope genuinely needs discussion. Often it is a sales tactic. We give you a price on the first message rather than after a discovery call.
Do I pay everything upfront? No. Half starts the work, half is paid before the site goes live.
Is there an ongoing fee? Only if you want one. Care plans start at KES 8,500 per month and can be cancelled any month. Your site remains yours regardless.
What about an online shop? Large catalogues, stock and returns do not fit our 72-hour model, and we will tell you that on the first call rather than the third.
Does a higher price always mean a better website? No. It usually means more scope. Ask what the extra money is buying and make sure it is something you need.
